Slavery and the southern econemy essays

Slavery and the southern econemy essays Slaves heavily supported the economy of the south due to the fact that so much money was invested into them and they produced a sizable chunk of cotton that was exported to the North and Europe. Since the economy was based on cotton, the more that you produced the more money you could make. Since almost everyone wanted to get richer they spent the money that they made on land and more slaves. Thus the south was heavily in debit at the time of the civil war. The cost of slaves was increased by the amount of money that the government and people had to spend on maintaining slavery. The government had to enforce the fugitive slave law and provide money and arms for the militias an troops stationed in the south to suppress any attempt at an uprising by slaves. Also the southern economy was heading toward a collapse due to rise in costs and a reduction in profits. As mentioned before the cost of maintaining slavery was increasing due cost to recapture slaves and the protection of whites. T he profit reduction is because of an over saturation of the cotton on to the global market. Another major factor was international pressures. By the 1830s slavery was being outlawed around the world. Importation was illegal and most countries abolished it all together. These nations began to sign treaties to enforce these laws that enabled the boycott of countries that imported or had slavery. The countries that would boycott slave areas were also some of the main consumers of cotton produced in the south. Due to these reasons slavery was a burden on the south. These however did not cause the civil war. The civil war was caused over states rights. However slavery still would of caused the downfall of the southern cash crop economy that was being practiced at the time leading up to the civil war. ...

Imperfect Subjunctive Verbs in Spanish

Imperfect Subjunctive Verbs in Spanish The imperfect subjunctive of Spanish is the simple past form of the subjunctive mood, the one used to refer to events or hypothesized events relating to the past (although it sometimes refers to the present). Although the equivalent verb form is rare in English, the imperfect subjunctive is an essential part of Spanish grammar. Key Takeaways: Imperfect Subjunctive in Spanish The imperfect subjunctive is the simple form of the past subjunctive. The imperfect subjunctive is used most often in a dependent clause that begins with  que. It can also follow  si  (the word for if) when referring to a condition that is unlikely. Spanish has two forms of the imperfect subjunctive, the -ra form and the -se form. The -ra form will be used for examples throughout this lesson because it is by far more common in speech. How To Use the Imperfect Subjunctive Like the present subjunctive, the imperfect subjunctive is used most often in sentences of the following form: Subject (may be implied) indicative verb que subject (may be implied) subjunctive verb The subject and indicative verb form what is known as an independent clause; que and what follows form a dependent clause. The imperfect subjunctive is most common when the independent clause is in the preterite, imperfect or conditional tense. The imperfect subjunctive also is used sometimes following si (the word for if). This lesson assumes that you know when to use the subjunctive and how it is conjugated. Here are the major uses of the imperfect subjunctive: Following a Past-Tense Independent Clause This use of the imperfect is the most straightforward, because all verbs clearly refer to the past. Note, however, that English may use a would in translation because of the sometimes hypothetical nature of the Spanish subjunctive: El gobierno ordenà ³ que se hablaran con los terroristas. (The government ordered them to speak to the terrorists.)Me asombrà ³ que nadie me diera apoyo. (It amazed me that nobody gave me support.)Todos esperbamos que dijera algo ms, pero eso fue todo. (We all hoped he would say something more, but that was all.)No querà a que mis hijos me vieran. (I didnt want my children to see me.) ¿Tenà as miedo que te matara? (Were you afraid he would kill you?) Following a Conditional Independent Clause The imperfect subjunctive can refer to a present possibility when it follows a main clause in a conditional tense. Such sentences cannot be translated word for word into English and may require the use of if or would: Nos gustarà a que hubiera ms participacià ³n. (We would like it if there were more participation. Note the use of the English subjunctive were in the translation.)Me temerà a que mi amigo tomara la misma actitud. (Id be afraid my friend would take on the same attitude.)Estarà a feliz que me dieras su opinion. (I would be happy if you gave me your opinion.) After Expressions of Possibility The main verb of a sentence following a word or phrase meaning maybe can be either in the indicative or the subjunctive. Use of the subjunctive may indicate considerable doubt on the speakers behalf that the statement is true. Quiz quisieran conocer los detalles. (Perhaps they wanted to know the details.)Tal vez pensaran que mis padres eran ricos. (Maybe they thought my parents were rich.)Posiblemente no tuvieran otras alternativas. (Possibly they didnt have other alternatives.) To Indicate an Unlikely Condition As with the English past subjunctive following if, the Spanish imperfect subjunctive can be used following si to indicate something that the speaker believes is false or highly unlikely. An example would be a sentence starting out si yo fuera rico (if I were rich). When used this way, the subjunctive verb is typically followed by verb in the conditional tense, such as si yo fuera rico, comprarà a un coche (if I were rich, I would buy a car). Note that the condition expressed by the subjunctive verb refers to the present. Si yo comprara la otra consola, podrà a ahorrar la diferencia para comprar juegos. (If I bought the other console, I could save the difference for buying games. See how comprara and bought refer to the present even though they take the form of past tenses.)Si estuvieras aquà , te estrecharà a entre mis brazos. (If you were here, Id hold you tightly in my arms.)Si viviera en Aragà ³n, me gustarà a esquiar. If I lived in Aragà ³n, Id like to ski. If you need to refer to a past condition, you can use the imperfect subjunctive of haber with a past participle to form the pluperfect subjunctive: Si yo hubiera comprado la otra consola, habrà a ahorrado la diferencia para comprar juegos. If I had bought the other console, I would have saved the difference to buy games.

Mise-En-Scene And Metaphors In Visual Literature Movie Review

Mise-En-Scene And Metaphors In Visual Literature - Movie Review Example Another use of metaphor can be found in the scene where Belfort describes the introduction of sexual activity in his office. The description of the first day at office shows a man enjoying sexual favor from a colleague in the elevator while Belfort and his associates are standing on the ground floor. The gradual upward movement of the elevator and the characters’ activity inside it indicates Belfort’s rise and what it consisted of. That the common man will always remain gullible and hungry for money is suggested by the last scene of the movie which is preceded by the voiceover asking "wouldn't you like to learn how to make money" and we are led to the voice introducing Jordan Belfort to a room full of people interested to listen to his sales training. From long shot to mid-long shot to medium shot the camera brings us closer to the young group of people who are eager to make quick money. The pedestal movement of the camera shows the curious faces of many such young face s who want to become a Jordan Belfort one day. A movie, therefore, is not a monolithic narrative but a visual literature created by directors, cinematographers, editors and screen players. From lighting to camera angle, to costume and movement of characters in a movie does have a meaning associated with it. The understanding of the mise-en-scene, therefore, provides an insight into the mind of the director. Both "Gravity" and "The Wolf of Wall street" are meshed with metaphors guiding the judgments of the viewers.

Polygyny Should not Be Legal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Polygyny Should not Be Legal - Essay Example The definition of a marriage is the union of a man and a woman but not multiple partners. This therefore implies that inclusion of several partners redefines the meaning of marriage, as people have known it throughout human history. Although certain individuals may have the financial capacity to take care of their multiple partners, this act is simply immoral. For instance, in the case of polygyny, the woman is undermined. This implies that women are given low status in the society because they are owned in a similar way as properties. This is morally wrong and can only be avoided if polygyny is illegal. In the case of polyandry, it would be very difficult for a single woman to play the roles of a wife to several husbands (DÃ ez MInguela, 2011). In addition, there would be too many children and chores to take care of for the woman. This is not to mention the possibility of conflict eruption in the family if the husbands do not agree on certain aspects. Polyandry continues to oppress against women. This is because in most instances, especially in the developing world, women are usually forced to get married since their parents view them as a waste of money if allowed to attend school. The issue gets worse when they are forced to get married to elderly men at tender ages (Tertilt, 2003). From this perspective, women are deprived of the right to choose what they wish to do. This adds to oppression against the female population and can be avoided if polyandry is illegal. If it were prohibited, women would have the chance to attend school and participate in developing their countries. Additionally, this practice goes against the teachings of the Holy Scriptures. This is because besides requiring a man to be committed to one wife, the Holy Scriptures also requires both to be faithful to each other.

Canadian Teenagers Essay -- Drugs and Alcohol, Cannabis, Marijuana

today's society Canadian teenagers are exposed to different pathway involving drugs. The most common drug used among Canadian teenagers is alcohol followed by cannabis.(Leslie, Karen 2008) Canadian teenagers are influenced by drugs and alcohol on a daily based at school and through the media. In Canada the legal drinking age is nineteen in most provinces with the exception of Quebec where it is eighteen years old. Teenagers who have family members with drug and alcohol problem or if they suffer from depression, anxiety or other various forms of mental health disorders are at a higher risk of developing and addiction or experimenting with drugs and alcohol.( Leslie, Karen 2008) . According to Leslie and Karen one in every five students will develop an alcohol dependency; it has an affect on their health, school and other problems. Students in the seventh and ninth grade indicated the average age for their first experience with alcohol is eleven years old (Leslie, Karen 2008). Alcohol intoxication comes along with great responsibilities. Adolescence are not mature enough to handle consequences and do not know the responsibilities thoroughly until they have experienced it. Alcohol plays a huge role in suicide and self-harm particularly among adolescence and young adults (Leslie, Karen 2008). The highest rate for adolescent patients is between the ages fifteen to nineteen years old who sustained unintentional injuries due to the presence of alcohol, which can also lead to violence among themselves (Leslie, Karen 2008). In Leslie and Karen research out of four hundred eight injuries involving violence 22.7 percent were involved in alcohol. Underage drinking can lead to unintentional fatal and non fatal injuries. The most common fat... ...ion during sex compared to females. During oral sex 44.4% of male’s claims to use condoms and 26.8% method only consisted of the female being on birth control. The smarter method using condoms and birth control during oral sex was only 8.1%. Leaving the most lack method, using no protection or any methods consisted 26.8% of males (Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality; 2006). The number of sexually active teens hasn't increased over the past two decades, the percentage of females having sex at a young age has. (Susan McClellan 2001). Having said, female parents disprove of teen pregnancy 56.8% of the time and males parents disprove 44 % of the time. Today in Canadian teen pregnancy and abortion rate are high, but Nunavut consists of the highest rates (McKay, Alexander). To get an abortion in Canada cost 400 dollars and it does not require permission from parents.

Did average SV increase, decrease, or not change with exercise? Increase 6. Resting and exercising CO – a. What was the average resting CO? 4.9 b. What was the average exercising CO? 14 c. The range of normal resting CO is between 4.2 L per minute and 5.84 L for these subjects. Did average CO increase, decrease, or not change with exercise? increase Discussion 1. What caused the change in HR with exercise? Muscles use more oxygen and  glucose from the blood with increased movement. This produces wastes that decrease blood pH below the normal range causing an increase in heart rate. The heart rate increase delivers blood to the lungs and kidneys more quickly so these organs can remove the wastes from the body. The faster the muscles use energy and create waste, the faster the heart must pump blood. 2. Discuss the effect of venous return and heart rate on exercise EDV. Exercise increases venous return by forcing your body to add and enlarge blood vessels. In addition to circulatory improvements, exercise helps muscles and tissues become conditioned to allow them to overcome the stresses of working out. During exercise, the body demands additional oxygen and requires removal of extra carbon dioxide increasing the heart rate. EDV is increased with exercise 3. What caused the change in ESV volume with exercise? ESV decreases with exercising so that there is less resistance for the blood to flow to increase cardiac output. 4. Why did SV change with exercise? SV increase during exercise because an individuals body needs more oxygen and nourishment that are both received from the pumping of blood. The level of increase of SV is also depends on the type of exercise 5. Discuss the importance of the change in CO with exercise? When the body is in rest cardiac output is lower as the demand in oxygen is low. During exercise heart rate and stroke volume increase which results in an increase in cardiac output 6. Restate your predictions that were correct and give data from your experiment that support them. Restate your predictions that were not correct and correct them, giving supporting data from your experiment that supports your corrections. My prediction were correct Application 1. We measured the stroke volume of the left ventricle. What was the average stroke volume of the right ventricle at rest and after exercise? 69 resting 104 exercising 2. Assume that for one beat, the stroke volume of the left ventricle is greater than that of the right ventricle. Explain why in a normal heart this would be corrected on the next beat. blood would be transferred from your systemic circulation into you pulmonary circulation. Pressures throughout your pulmonary circulation would begin increasing. As soon as small amount of blood is transferred from the systemic to pulmonary circulation, the pressure in the pulmonary veins and left atrium increases a  little. This increases the filling of the left ventricle, and the resulting increase in its end-diastolic volume increases the stroke volume, correcting the problem 3. Explain why elite athletes have a lower than normal heart rate, yet have a higher than normal ability to increase cardiac output. An athlete has a larger stroke volume, which means a greater volume of oxygen is delivered to the body per heartbeat. They usually have larger heart that results in higher cardiac output, as more blood is pumped out with each beat. The raised cardiac output allows the heart to beat more slowly
